So thousands of people used to congregate to hear Jesus? How come none of them bothered to write about it?

Because I don't believe it happened. Many scholars don't believe it happened either.As for people being illiterate,there were enough literate people to give a good history on everything else of that period. The four gospels were written in the third person because the stories were being repeated years after they were told. And re-told.
